God's Sacrifice
Author: Nancy Autumn Deimler (Pennsylvania, USA)
When five of my relatives visited one night for a family meal, I noticed that we didn’t have quite enough food to go round.
I caught my mum’s eye and nodded at the platter of beef. She understood and made a gesture as if to say, ‘Don’t worry about it.’
Mum finished eating her dinner before everyone else and then I realised she had taken the smallest piece of beef to make sure that no one walked away from the table hungry.
Many times, I have seen my mum think of others before she thinks of herself. Her loving sacrifices remind me of the ultimate sacrifice God made for us.
God sacrificed ‘his only begotten Son’ (John 3:16, KJV) to atone for our sins.
Occasionally, we forget or are simply unaware of how great his sacrifice was. We must remember and pass on our understanding of his sacrificial love.
I have tried to follow my mum’s example of putting others’ needs before her own. Someday I hope to show my children how our daily sacrifices can be small reflections of God’s love.
Prayer: Dear Lord, please help us to think of others before we think of ourselves. Amen
