MY CALLING

Bible Reading: Mark 10:13-16

For over 45 years, I've cared for the needs of children — my children, friends’ children, neighbourhood children, my grandchildren, and my great-grandchildren.  I’ve spent much of my life changing diapers, wiping runny noses, soothing hurts, and reading storybooks.
I must admit that there have been times when I’ve questioned whether what I’m doing serves any purpose in God’s kingdom. Does baking cookies and doing crafts count for much?  Does wiping away tears or simply being there for a child make a difference?  But then I remember Jesus welcoming the little children and gathering them into his arms.  Jesus said, “It is too such as these [children] that the kingdom of God belongs.”

When I read this verse, I realise that what I do is important.  This is my calling — to be there for children, greet them at the door, play with them, pray for them, and tell them about Jesus.  Caring for children provides opportunities to show them through our words and actions how much Jesus loves them.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for allowing us to be witnesses of your love. Help us to grow closer to you each day.  Amen.
