THE LONGEST JOURNEY

Bible Reading: Psalm 86:1-13

I have taken many trips in my lifetime, beginning when my family moved from Texas to Colorado when I was young.  I have marvelled at the time it took to carve the Grand Canyon.  I have stood on the shore and watched dolphins frolic in the waves.  I have gone deep into caves and been in awe of great stalagmites, and I have flown above the patchwork of crops in the Midwest.

Some journeys are not measured in miles but in years.  I was married for a quarter century until my wife died.  I watched my children grow into adults.  And I have been in prison for nearly ten years.

Yet my longest journey began when I accepted Jesus into my life.  This trip changed me completely, and it will take the rest of my life.  I will never travel alone on this journey, because the Holy Spirit is at my side and Jesus leads the way.  A multitude of travellers accompany me on the same road, and I’m grateful for all of them.  My toll has been paid, my itinerary has been set, and the route has been marked.  In the distance I can see my glorious home.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for being with us on our journey and for the promise of a home with you in heaven when this life is over.  In Jesus’ name. Amen.
