In April, basketball season was ending. I loved coaching and working with the girls but had always longed for a child of my own. When a friend suggested adoption, I began thinking and praying about it, and I felt God nudging me to adopt a child. So after 25 years of working as head varsity coach, I resigned and started the adoption process. Family and friends were concerned about my decision, wondering who would choose a 47-year-old, divorced, single woman to adopt her child, but I trusted in the Lord.
Two years had passed when, on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I received the long-awaited call. Tears of joy flooded my soul. When I met Luke’s birth mother, she said that she was looking for someone her mother’s age and single as the person to adopt her child. I knew that God had provided. On December 20 at the hospital, I was handed a beautiful boy.
I can imagine how Mary felt on Christmas Day when God’s Son, Jesus, was born. I have dedicated my five-year-old Luke to the church and thank God daily for this miracle in my life. I have become convinced that God is still in the business of performing miracles — by healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, making the lame walk, and caring for God’s children.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the world’s greatest gift, Jesus Christ. We praise your holy name. Amen.
