SUREFOOTED

For several months my severe arthritis affected my gait.  When I watched a video of myself walking, I was astonished.  My right foot slanted, causing me to limp.

Seeing my gait made me think of the way that problems we face can cause us to drift away from our spiritual path.  Trials tend to drain our physical and mental strength.  However, when we take our questions and troubles to God through prayer and Bible study, we find our weak feet becoming sturdy and strong.  As Habakkuk discovered, “The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights”.

Sometimes when we feel ourselves going smoothly along the spiritual path, we may boastfully take credit for our stable footing.  At those times, we might want to heed the words of Isaiah, “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away”. We can give God the glory for providing us with strength and security.

Prayer: Loving heavenly Father, help us to walk in your sure ways and clear path.  In the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
