Going forward in faith

Our church recently lost one of its long-serving members. Over the course of her long life, Liz was an important mentor to many in our church. Many years ago, shortly after we had joined the church, Liz approached me about becoming the chair of the stewardship committee. I wasn’t sure I was qualified, so I told her I would like to think about the offer. However, shortly after the conversation, our minister contacted me and thanked me for accepting the position.

In hindsight, Liz did me a big favour, because the position forced me to step out of my comfort zone. That first step of faith started my active service to the church that continues to this day. I know my faith has grown because of the opportunities I’ve had to serve, and I can thank Liz for getting me started.

When we receive an opportunity to serve the Lord, it may feel as if   it is beyond our abilities. Or perhaps the call doesn’t make sense to us. That was the case in today’s scripture reading. Peter had much more experience of fishing than Jesus did. He had just spent all night fishing with no results when Jesus told him to put his nets out in deep water. But Peter did what Jesus asked. Peter not only caught nets full of fish, but he also took his first step toward a life of incredible faith. Stepping forward in faith, even when we have doubts, helps us to grow as fol- lowers of Christ.

Prayer: Dear God, help me to step out in faith when you call me to serve. Amen
