In our small, rural county foodbanks are opening up in many towns, supported by local churches. One church set an example of meeting the needs of children who qualify for free school lunches by giving them with ready-to-eat items to take home for the weekend.
To support this ministry, I review supermarket offers each week, watching for reductions on non-perishable food items. Then I purchase several for the foodbank. I also place my purchases in paper bags so that I can pass the bags on to Sunday school children to decorate. The bags are then given to the foodbank and reused for giving out food and non-perishables to those in need. In this way, the children’s artwork becomes an invitation to attend Sunday school and gives the Sunday school children an opportunity to experience mission work.
One individual alone cannot save the world from hunger, but as we give what we can God will multiply our contributions so that more children can be fed.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank you for helping us to provide nourishment to others. Amen
