Reflections on Abundance

For a number of years now my priority on Monday afternoons has been to help out at a Denver church that serves the homeless and the needy.

Passing in front of me is a slow-moving queue of people in layered garments with soiled backpacks. Many say nothing; some comment on the weather, and others offer thanks for the meal or to me for volunteering.

Recently an engaging man said, ‘I have a question. Would you still do this if you won the lottery?’ I answered, ‘Absolutely.’

I think I responded so quickly to his question because I feel that I have ‘won the lottery’ in so many ways.

Recognising and feeling that I have an abundance—of shelter, ample food, health, income and relationships—motivates me to give back to those labouring in poverty and related struggles.

Jesus didn’t avoid the poor but instead modelled a caring, embracing acceptance for us to emulate.

In modern times, Mother Teresa, among others, reminds us that while God won’t make us do good, he certainly gives us the opportunity to help our neighbours.

Prayer: Dear God, we know that you lay before us many opportunities for sharing your love with those in need. May we always be ready to embrace your call to serve. Amen

Would it be possible to have a section where the Gospel is explained for Deaf people who are not yet true Christians to view? Maybe it could be a translation of a good tract? In fact, as Christians, we can never study the Gospel message enough for as we grasp it more and more our love for God grows and compels us to share it with others. God bless your endeavours for Him KS
