Finding our Way
Author: Stephen Johnson (California, US)
When I was young I wanted to join the Army. Later, I decided to become a college professor. Then, after starting a family, I decided to teach in a high school. But I couldn’t get a job. I was frustrated because I loved teaching.
Full of regret at the career I was giving up and thinking I was for ever closing the door to teaching, I became a police officer. Then I was given an opportunity to become a police training instructor. In this role I saw my education and passion come together.
Sometimes, when I look back at the path my life has taken, I feel as if I’ve been trying to find my way through a maze. At each turning, I guessed at what the final destination might be, but then my previous guess proved wrong. I haven’t necessarily made wrong turns. My mistake was in thinking that I was in charge.
Making plans was fine, but I have held too tightly to those plans rather than asking God for guidance. As we try to find our way through life, making long-term plans is healthy and wise. But when we remember to hold our plans and choices loosely – submitting them to Christ and seeking godly counsel – we may discover that God has been working for our good all along.
Prayer: Dear God, help us to seek your will and trust that you will guide us. Amen
