At times the mundane parts of life can make me lose my sense of joy in the Lord. I know that writing a paper for college or doing everyday tasks does not make me jump up and shout, ‘Hallelujah!’ But I am learning during these moments to turn my attention to Christ and all that he has done for me. And this fills me with gratitude and gives me a better perspective.

Even psychologists emphasise that a disposition of gratitude promotes healthy living and joy. The Bible – especially the book of Psalms – is full of gratitude and praise for all God’s good works. Paul expresses thankfulness in all of his letters. Of course, the greatest act to be thankful for is Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Even a glimpse of what the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ accomplished for us will fill us with  joy unspeakable.

Prayer: Dear Father, we give thanks for all you have done. Restore to us the joy of your salvation (see Psalm 51:12). As Jesus taught us, we pray, ‘Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.’
