Trespasses

Years ago I worked in a small office where the employees often had to share work spaces.

One day, returning from a few days off, I discovered that someone had been using my desk, had eaten a meal and spilled a drink. I was irritated at the sight of the mess and began cleaning it.

Behind me, the radio began broadcasting a daily Bible study with the host inviting listeners to join him in reciting the Lord’s Prayer.

Automatically I bowed my head and prayed along, ‘Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us’.

I froze in my recitation of the familiar words. I thought, Am I being forgiving? I knew I wasn’t. How could I harbour anger and resentment toward one of my colleagues for a trivial offence when the Lord offers me forgiveness for any sin I commit?

Ashamed of my petty selfishness, I prayed for God’s forgiveness and asked him to bless my colleagues.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for your promise to forgive us. Remind us of all that you’ve forgiven us, when we pray, ‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation. Amen.’*
