One night I began to scold my two daughters for taking too long to get to bed. It was getting late, and they had been told to hurry.

Then I remembered that every evening they stop at their bedroom door to read the memory verse that one daughter pins up there. I stopped my scolding, knowing that following this simple reminder to memorise God’s word was worth the delay.

Throughout the Bible we are given instructions about how to remember God. As a reminder of his awesome power and deliverance, God instructed Joshua to build a memorial (Joshua 4:1–22). Earlier God also instructed the Israelites with the words of today’s verse.

Each of us can find a method for remembering God and put it into practice. My wife, Nancy, places little notes of scripture all over our house as reminders. What is crucial is not our memory method but that we remember who God is and how much we need him.

Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, be with us each day, gently reminding us of who you are. Amen
