In The Thicket

Recently I had the opportunity to explore Yellowstone National Park with a small group of educators.  One evening, as we walked single-file through dense woods, one of the guides signaled for us to stop and be silent.  As she was staring into the thicket, her face turned pale.  Then she began to slowly back up.  In that moment, I knew that something among those trees was dangerous.  At first I was consumed with fear.  But almost immediately, I felt my heart lift as I sensed a holy Presence next to me.  I knew that whatever was going to happen, I would not be facing it alone.  This assurance made me courageous.

The story of Hannah and Samuel shows us that we can always find strength in God.  It took tremendous fortitude for Hannah to keep her promise to God.  Our challenge is to trust God, listen to God’s words, and obey.  In turn, obeying God brings peace to our hearts and our lives.
I will never know what was in the thicket, since the guides refused to say.  However, as we were quickly leaving the deep woods of Montana, I stepped out of line to let the ones behind me go ahead.  I was able to confidently bring up the rear because I felt the presence of God walking right beside me.

Prayer: O God, give us open hearts and minds to hear your words and trust that you know what is best for us.  May we be obedient and courageous in you.  Amen.
