Let The Light Shine

Now that I’m retired, I look forward to my trips to a nearby park to walk through the woods.  Often as I walk, the sunlight filters through the trees and shines down on me.  I sometimes find myself pausing to pray saying, “Lord, where is your light in my life today?”  As I continue walking, clarity often comes, and I begin to recognise those treasures that moth and rust cannot destroy.

One treasured light is the friend who is always there to listen.  Other light comes from those at church who, with hearts of compassion, visit the sick and the elderly.  I see God’s light in my wife, as she shows love and cares for our children and grandchildren.  Or God’s light shines brightly in the smiles of those who thank us as they receive food from the food pantry where I volunteer.

Sometimes the many things we fill our lives with can block out the light that is our true treasure.  They can even keep us from seeing our Lord’s goodness when it’s there in front of us.  When this happens, it’s usually time to stop, slow down a bit, and focus on seeing the Lord’s presence as much as we can in all the everyday places we pass by each day.  I thank our Lord for the times I’m able to recognise the treasures God places right before my eyes.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to see you each day in those around us, and help us to be a light to others.  Amen.
