Soaring

One beautiful autumn day, I took the day off to go for a hike in the mountains along the ridge near the Delaware Water Gap where the raptor migration was at its height.  With binoculars at the ready, I began to scan the sky above the ridgeline to the northeast.  Soon in the distance I spied a red-tailed hawk circling slowly in an updraft.  Higher and higher it soared until it was almost out of sight.  Then turning to the southeast, it folded back its wings and began a long, rapid descent along the ridgeline.  Down and down it came, picking up speed as it passed overhead — barely above the tree tops.  Finding another updraft, it repeated the cycle until it glided out of sight.

Over time I have come to realize that with the Lord’s help, I can be like that hawk.   God constantly provides me moments full of the spiritual lift that I need to get through another week.  Sunday worship or time each day with The Upper Room or praying with my wife in the mornings are for me like the updrafts that enable the migrating hawk to fly to its destination.  Each day, we can claim the promise that “those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.”

Prayer: Gracious Lord, when we are tired or discouraged, bring us into your presence and raise us up so that we may continue to worship and serve you.  Amen.
