Ancient Light

We spent three nights in a small, remote Cape coastal village.  Due to the absence of light pollution, the night sky was ablaze with stars, planets, and all manner of twinkling light.  The Milky Way and the rest of the cosmos was vividly on display.  As I gazed in awe at the magnificence, I was struck by the fact that the light I was seeing was ancient light.  Some of the stars might already have expired, but their light was still traveling to earth due to the immense distance.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.”  Thousands of years later, this message is still true.  His light has not expired in the lives of millions of people.  Jesus lived in such a way that his light continues to shine through the passage of time.

What about us?  Few of us will have the opportunity to shine such a bright light, but we all can shine a light that makes a difference.  If we take the teachings of Jesus seriously and reflect the light of Christ in all the places we go and in the lives of those we encounter, we can make a difference in the world.

Prayer: Dear God, by your Holy Spirit, we will let your light shine through us each day.  Amen.
