The wooden stepladder I had borrowed was old, but it would do the job as I painted the ceiling in my house. Distracted by the task at hand, I took several hours to notice that the ladder was covered by drops of paint. Some were large and others tiny, but hardly a patch of original wood could be seen under the rainbow ofcolours.
It was not hard to see how these layers had been deposited. In fact, I contributed a number of my own white dots that day, but they were few compared to the thousands already there. It must have taken many years to develop such a thick coat of paintdrops.
As I painted the ceiling that day, I realised that this was a picture of my life with Christ. Just as that ladder collected droplets in the presence of a painter, my character will show that I have been with the Master. I hope that my attitude is more understanding and hopeful whilemy actions grow in gentleness and compassion. Peace and forgiveness will mark my relationships as I forgive, just as Jesus forgave me. Afterall, he purifies us so that we may be ‘eager to do what is good’.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help us to act more like you so that, little by little, people will see more of you in us. Amen
