One sunny day my sister and I went to a craft fair to sell our hand- painted gourds. We took turns looking after the stall and alternated lunch breaks. When I returned from lunch, my sister told me about a stray dog she had seen gasping for breath.

Later, she saw the dog again when it was her turn to go to lunch. She fed the dog and gave him a drink of water, and when it was time for her to return to the stall, she asked a staff member at the fair to look after him.

Later in the evening, the dog was still in the care of the volunteer but was quite happy to see us. Our mum allowed the dog to stay overnight with us so that we could take him to the vet the next day. The vet told us that the dog was suffering from malnutrition and neglect. In that condition, he said, the dog would not have lived much longer.

That day, the meditation in El Aposento Alto was  about  missed  opportunities  to  help  others in need. The meditation resonated with me as I thought about our encounter with this dog. Though the meditation was about helping people, I know that God cares for all of creation and for all creatures. And I was sure that God wanted us to help this dog. Since that day, the dog, whom we named Pedro, has been a member of our family.

Prayer: Creator God, thank-you for being the beacon for all humankind. May we always be prepared to care for those in difficult and vulnerable situations. Amen
