The Lonely Lamb.
Author: Pauline Lewis (South Wales)
Driving out of the estate where we had been on holiday, we noticed a single lamb at the edge of the field. It was obviously some days since his birth; his legs were strong, but it was surprising to see him there all alone. All week we had enjoyed watching the flocks of ewes with their newborn lambs, gambling around or sucking contentedly.
I suddenly caught a glimpse of the shepherd in the field. He had a tiny lamb in his arms, probably destined for the warmth of the farmhouse until it was stronger. But he had also spotted the wanderer and was now striding purposefully towards it. This lone lamb was not in need of warmth or shelter, but it needed to be sent back in the right direction, to be reunited with its mother and be kept safe and protected.
How comforting it is to know that, though we may have walked for a long time with Jesus, when we are prone to wander, he will meet us and bring us back to where we need to be.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for seeking and saving us when we stray from you. Help us to remember that we can never wander beyond your love and care. Amen
