When I was young, I would go to a small town in Pennsylvania to visit my mother’s grandmother. My great-grandmother encouraged me to walk into town. I was frightened that I would not be able to find my way back, but she told me that if I would just stand in front of the main shop’s big window and look up the hill I would be able to see her house and that she would be there. After that I never feared becoming lost.

Years later, I returned to her small town. My great-grandmother was long gone, but we stopped in front of the store so I could look up the hill and recall the kind, wonderful woman and the love that had waited for me there.

We are in the season of Lent. During this journey, we start to look toward another hill, one known as Golgotha. We will once again remember the Last Supper, the trial and the crucifixion. But  then Easter Sunday will come. When I am lost, confused or frightened, I look toward that hill and know that I can find salvation there. Christ loves us so much that he suffered and laid down his life on that hill. Just as my great-grandmother always waited for me on her hill in Pennsylvania, Christ is waiting, ready to welcome all of us.

Prayer: Dear Lord, remind us to look toward that hill where we find our salvation. Help us to reach out to others with your love and to lead them to you. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
