Red-shirt Saturday

My colleague John spends most Saturdays with his grandson,  Carson. They wear matching red shirts for their fun adventures and work days together. The relationship is filled with love, trust, caring and joy. Recently, John celebrated his birthday with his family. After he had blown out the candles on the cake, Carson asked him what he wished for. John replied that he didn’t make a wish and then asked Carson what he would wish for on his birthday. Carson told John that he would wish for red-shirt Saturdays for the rest of his life!

Carson’s reply touched my heart. I thought about my own parents and siblings; my husband, children and grandchildren, and the relationships we share – sometimes loving and wonderful and sometimes not. We learn about love through our human relationships, but we  learn about perfect love through our relationship with God. We love because God first loved us. His arms invite each of us in – at any time and at any place.

Following God’s will and Jesus’ example of loving actions will lead us into relationships that bring satisfaction and joy as well as drawing others to the kingdom of heaven – which is even better than red-shirt Saturday!

Prayer: Loving Father, thank you for your Son who shows us perfect love. Strengthen and renew us each day so we can love others in his name. Amen
