Living Water

Water is essential to life. It makes up 50-75 per cent of our bodies, yet we often forget to drink enough water or we substitute it with other drinks which do us little good. As a result, many of us spend our days slightly dehydrated.

I love the parallel between these facts and what Jesus says in scripture: ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life’ (John 4:13-14).

Recently, I created a new daily practice to make these thoughts tangible. When I get out of bed and make my way to the bathroom, I pick up a special glass I’ve placed next to the basin. While I fill up the glass, I turn my mind to Christ. In gratitude, I sip slowly, thanking him for the life he offers me through this water and his living water. This practice reminds me that Jesus is the source of my life and that I need to spend time with God—the ‘living water’ that sustains me.

Prayer: Dear God, help us to remember that our lives are better when we drink deeply of your living water. Amen

Just wanted to say thank you for making BSL daily devotions available. I am hearing and often sign at church for d/Deaf friends. I am finding this resource very useful in helping me improve my signing skills as well as focussing on God every day, bless you. CR
