A Good Taste in a Sour World

My family and I have been working with the poor in Northern Bangladesh for five years. During this time we have endured and witnessed many hardships.

One night, I despaired when a friend came to us in tears after storms had destroyed her roof, exposing her family to the harsh monsoon rains. As if that were not enough, the deluge was starting to wash away her clay house. She had no savings for repairs because thieves had broken into her house a few days earlier. We both felt as if everything was stacked against her.

Though we could not repair her roof, my wife and I read Psalm 34 with her to remind us that God is good and to hold on to the promise, as the psalmist did, as we wait to be delivered from our fears (v. 4). Our friend left us, encouraged. Later we heard that her house was saved when a close friend was able to install a new roof before the house completely washed away.

The psalmist challenges us to seek the Lord and to keep praising God, even in the midst of trouble. The promise is that we will see God’s goodness and it will be so good that we can truly taste it.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for being our safe refuge and for hearing us when we cry out to you. Help us to seek your righteousness more each day. Amen
