I was visiting a missionary friend in Mexico City. We had spent the day exploring its many beautiful and interesting sites. We were on the subway, travelling home at the end of the day when suddenly the city was hit by a small earthquake. We were plunged into darkness as the power failed and the train coasted to a stop between stations.

The change in the crowded car was instant and dramatic. Where just moments before I had been chatting happily, anticipating a good meal and more time spent visiting friends, I was suddenly faced with the terrifying knowledge that I was trapped far below the streets. As I felt panic beginning to rise in me, through the darkness I felt my friend take my hand. Her touch reminded me that I was not alone, and I was immediately comforted as we waited for the situation to be resolved.

The Bible promises us that we have the Lord’s comforting presence with us wherever we go. God delights to hold our hand in the dark places of life, where we feel alone, forgotten and afraid. Remembering this, we can find the help and comfort we need to return to the light.

Prayer: Take our hand, God, today and every day. Remind us that because of your love, we are never alone. Amen
