‘I don’t like retirement. I feel I have no purpose,’ I complained to God. I couldn’t get out of the rut I seemed to be in that day.

Later that afternoon I took a walk with my two-year-old great-nephew. He wasn’t satisfied to just walk; he wanted to explore the world beyond the road. We watched a robin pull a juicy worm from a newly mown lawn, we waved and smiled at an elderly neighbour, we paused to feel the wind in our hair and chased our shadows in the sunshine. My attitude changed. I was no longer focused on my worries; my eyes had opened to the world around me.

In our reading for today, Jesus changed the perspective of two blind men who probably felt that their lives were going nowhere. Jesus’ presence and compassion gave their world a new perspective when he opened their eyes. Now they could look into the eyes of loved ones and enjoy the beauty around them. Not only did they receive physical vision, but they gained new spiritual vision that day.

We all get discouraged some days, but it’s important to remember that Jesus also crosses our path each day. If we ask him, he will open our eyes to the hope offered for each one of us.

Prayer: Dear Lord, give us eyes to see beyond our limited vision. Teach us to see you in our everyday lives. Amen
