Spiritual Lives

Bible Reading: Hebrews 12:1-3

My friend and I enclose letters with our yearly Christmas cards. When I opened Cindy’s card this year, I was eager to hear of her latest family activities. Her chatty letter began, ‘How is your spiritual life?’ What an odd way to start a letter! I always write, ‘How are you?’ And Cindy had always done so in the past. Her new question made me wonder if she didn’t care about physical health: I have multiple sclerosis and my husband, Kurt, has brain cancer. Her question annoyed me.

However, as the New Year approached, I pondered which was more important: our physical health or the health of our spiritual lives? Of course, I immediately knew the answer: the condition of our spiritual lives. God knows my spiritual life and how I’m doing.

But Cindy’s question made me realise that I need to be more aware of my spiritual life. Do I read my Bible daily and spend time with other Christians? Does my love for God show in my words and actions? Are my thoughts fixed on Jesus? Do I remember to thank God as well as making requests? These and other concerns will lead each of us to greater spiritual health.

Prayer: Lord God, help us remember to examine our spiritual lives each day to make sure we are living for you. Amen
