The Storm

I lay in bed listening to the wind roaring around the house, wondering what damage it would do. Our TV screens revealed the devastation the next morning, with powerful waves lashing the coast, rivers overflowing into houses and streets and the Somerset Levels engulfing farms and cutting off whole communities. People’s lives were thrown into chaos as they had to evacuate their homes and their livelihoods were threatened.

Storms were a common occurrence on the Sea of Galilee. Perhaps the storm in today’s reading was more powerful than the disciples, even though they were fishermen, had ever experienced. The powerful waves were threatening to sink the boat, and they were afraid.

Jesus was fast asleep in the boat, oblivious to the storm, until he was disturbed by the frantic cries of the disciples. Couldn’t he see that they were about to perish?

Jesus woke and immediately stilled the storm. ‘Where is your faith?’ he asked them.

At times we all experience the storms of life, which can batter our faith and trust in God. But Jesus says that it is precisely when things are tough that we should trust him, stop and listen to his voice.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to know that you are with us in the storms of life. Amen
