Abide with Me

Doug, who looked after our community gardens, was dying of cancer. I wrote to him while he was in hospital, thinking that would be the one and only time I would do so. I didn’t really know Doug but wanted to give him some support.

Imagine my surprise when, a week later, I received a response from him. His letter included one of his poems along with a book of stamps. I knew when I got that book of stamps that he hoped I would keep writing. I wrote to Doug every seven to ten days but never received another response. I became a carer from a distance. I don’t know why Doug picked me to be his correspondent, but I felt honoured to be chosen. I felt that I was abiding with him during those last four months of his life.

I was blessed to be able to show God’s love and care to Doug during that time. I’m glad I paid attention to the prompting to reach out to him. We never know when Christ will call us to be his hands and feet. It’s up to us to be awake, to listen and then to respond.

Prayer: Thank you, loving God, for the opportunities you give us to serve others. Amen
