Going God's Way

One beautiful November morning, I decided to tackle the leaves in my garden. The day was pleasant outside but breezy. I started up the leaf blower. I soon discovered that even though I wanted to blow the leaves due north, a north-west wind was blowing the leaves back behind me into the areas I had cleared. I realised that to be productive, I needed to change my strategy and blow the leaves more toward the east, in the direction the wind was blowing. Once I did that, my job was much easier, since I was using the wind to my advantage instead of fighting it.

Then I remembered Isaiah 55:8, in which God says, ‘My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.’ How many times have I tried to do things my way and not God’s way? How often, when I insisted on doing things my way, did the results blow back into my face, like the leaves in the wind that morning? But I have found that my progress is not hindered when I decide to listen to God’s words and to follow his ways.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for reminding us that we can trust you for guidance. Amen
