Ever since I was a small child I’ve enjoyed the fun, beauty and tranquillity of the beach. Now in my 60s, I have taken up a new hobby of collecting broken pieces of old glass that have been tumbled and smoothed by the sea and sand and washed up on shore.

Recently, as I found pieces of glass along the beach, I began to think about the similarity between this beautiful glass and our lives. We experience brokenness caused by painful or sorrowful situations. Just as the broken pieces of glass are made beautiful again by the waves of the sea, rocks and sand, we can be made whole, right, good and beautiful through God’s tender love and care. 1 Peter 5:7 tells us, ‘Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.’ We can give to God our broken lives, knowing that he will make us new.

Prayer: Almighty and loving God, creator of heaven and earth, thank you for loving us and making us new. May we be aware of your loving care in all the situations of our lives as we pray, ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ Amen
