The House of God
Author: Timothy James Wendt (South Dakota, US)
Our text reminds me of a time when I was in the army and enjoying a three-day pass in Germany. We were doing some sightseeing, and our group stopped to visit a very old and beautiful church. It was massive, and as we entered, I immediately experienced a sense of awe and reverence, a feeling which was quickly reinforced when a man motioned for me to take off my hat.
Is today’s quoted verse teaching us to be on our best behaviour only while inside a church building? Is it the building that is the ‘pillar and foundation’ of God’s truth, or something else? Although our church buildings are symbols of the household of God, our bodies are also his dwelling place as the pillars of the church (see today’s reading and Revelation 3:12).
My visit to the church in Germany reminded me that I am always in church because my body is God’s temple. If we are walking faithfully with Christ, we will reflect that holiness in our speech, our love, our faith, our purity—wherever we are.
Prayer: O God, we long to be your holy people in every step of our life’s journey. Amen
