Some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets I have ever seen have occurred while I was standing on an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean. In quiet moments like those, I can sometimes sense God speaking to me and calling me to do something. Unfortunately, my response is often similar to Moses’: ‘Who am I to do this? Surely others are more qualified!’ But God’s answer is simple: ‘I didn’t ask them. I asked you.’ I see now that many of the great heroes of the Bible doubted or hesitated at God’s call. What made them great was not their abundant self-confidence but their faith in God.

At times, we may feel unable or unqualified to do what God is asking of us. We may respond by turning away in fear or denial. But instead of ignoring God’s call, we can stop and think about his answer to Moses: ‘I will be with you’ (Exodus 3:12). If we can be certain of God’s presence with us, if we can have as much faith in him as he seems to have in us, then we can boldly pursue whatever is asked of us.

Prayer: Our Father in heaven, help us to have the unshakeable faith that we can do whatever you have asked of us. Amen
