The southern skyline of the Isle of Wight is dominated by St Catherine’s Oratory, a medieval lighthouse affectionately known by locals as the Pepper Pot.

The tower was constructed by Walter de Godeton, as a penance for stealing wine from a wrecked ship that foundered off the southern coast of the island, and was completed in 1328.

One day my wife and I decided to take a walk up the steep hill to the monument. It was a wild and wintry day and the wind whipped across the desolate hillside, causing us to lean at an angle to remain upright.

We could hear nothing but the roar of the wind in our ears. Having been blown and beaten on our ascent we were glad to take refuge inside the thick stone walls and were immediately struck by the calmness that welcomed us.

Life can bring us many storms. We may be facing the high winds of financial insecurity, the heavy rains of failing health or the wild gales of a relationship crisis. However, in the midst of the tempest God calls for us to find shelter in him.

By taking our problems and cares to him in prayer, we can find a peace that passes all understanding: a refuge in the storm.

Prayer: When I feel buffeted and battered by the storms of life, help me, dear God, to know your peace and find in you a place of stillness and calm. Amen
